Deborah Smith has more than 25 years experience
as a psychologist and psychotherapist
A different perspective
Clients visit a Psychotherapist with a wide variety of difficulties, e.g. anxiety, depression, phobias, obsessions, ruminations, anger control, stress, fear, insecurity, alcohol and drug-related problems, eating disorders, sexual and marital problems.
Having been trained to listen, the psychotherapist can perceive the difficulties from the client’s point of view, thus enabling the client to see things more clearly, and from a different perspective. Opening remarks of clients are frequently:
“I don’t know which way to turn….”
“I don’t know what to do….”
“What’s the matter with me?”
Clarity & freedom
Psychotherapy sessions enable clients to explore emotional aspects of their life. Free and open discussion in complete confidence is fostered. The therapist is an independent person who neither judges nor tells the client what to do but helps to find solutions.
Bottled-up feelings such as anger, anxiety, grief and embarrassment can become very intense. An opportunity to express them and talk in a very safe and secure environment can help dissolve the feelings and reduce pain. This makes the problems easier to understand. Understanding gives clarity and freedom.
Psychotherapy: A brief explanation
A Psychotherapist works with individuals, couples or groups. Work is done to help people improve their sense of well-being, alleviate distress, resolve crises and increase their innate ability to solve problems and make decisions.
A Psychotherapist aims to help people cope more effectively with concerns that arise throughout life such as relationship difficulties, stress, anxiety, career change, bereavement and illness.
In many ways, I’m unrecognisable from the person that first picked Deborah’s name from the phonebook. That transition, the growth and confidence to be myself, is testament to Deborah’s life-changing work.
A Psychotherapist applies research-based approaches to help the client understand problems and develop solutions. Clients are taught how to develop effective coping mechanisms to deal with any problem that may exist now or in the future.
A client would normally see a psychotherapist for an hour once a week.
Deborah uses a range of approaches including humanistic, psycho-dynamic, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and positive psychology.
I never came away from a session with her…not feeling better about things, or without feeling more optimistic or without a clearer understanding.
Areas of help
Deborah has experience across a wide range of areas including:
Marital and relationship problems
Help with healthy living
Post traumatic shock
Help with life’s difficulties
Deborah qualified as a psychologist in 1991 and has an MSc in Positive Psychology. She has run a private psychotherapy practice since 1992 treating a wide variety of clients with a range of different problems and issues.
She is an eclectic therapist who has trained in all the main forms of therapy therefore enabling her to give an individualistic approach to each client. She treats every client as an individual. She doesn’t believe in trying to make the therapy fit the client but rather tailors the therapy to the client.
Deborah is also a qualified hypnotherapist and uses hypnotherapy as a tool to aid the therapy when appropriate i.e. for phobias, desensitisation, accessing repressed memories or for stress relief and relaxation.
Her MSc in Positive Psychology combined with her qualifications in psychology means she has a comprehensive knowledge of both ends of the human condition; mental health and ill-health.
Positive psychology focuses on optimal functioning, wellbeing and happiness whereas psychology focuses on what goes wrong with people on a psychological level, ie., depression and anxiety.
There are very few people in the world who are qualified in both psychology and positive psychology. This gives her a unique insight into the psychological workings of people’s minds and ability to enable them to not only transcend their difficulties but reach their goals, optimal wellbeing and happiness.
It has taken a while for me to find someone I could trust as I do Deborah. She shows the perfect balance of empathy, respect and firm challenge. I believe it is this balance together with her very credible technical competence in a variety areas of psychology that makes her so very effective.
